When I was a little girl, on Sunday afternoons, my dad would load all of us kids into the car after church & we would go on a ride. He would take us on back roads & we would sometimes go to places where he had never gone before. That was just a part of my growing up & I have very fond memories of these rides. One of my favorite rides was going up Ogden canyon to Huntsville's to the Monastery. It was a whole new concept to me when I was young & it was beautiful & peaceful over there. Oh, I loved it!
Sunday, Clayn had to speak in sacrament & teach his primary class. I have been sick for the past few days with a terrible head cold & cough. So, the kids & I stayed home from church. Around 6:00 in the evening the kids had been fighting & they were bored from sitting in the house all day. Clayn gathered everyone up & toke them to the car. Tess was quite concerned about where we were going, are we going to a park to play & swing. Parker wanted to find some grass & cement to do somersaults on. We drove up Mink Creek , it was raining & everything is so pretty & green. Then we hit Caribou National Forest; I told the kids that we were in a forest & they were so excited. By the way, it wasn't the first time that we have driven up there or that they have ever been in a forest. It was the first time that they both realized what it was. Then the questions started coming;
Tess : Dad, what does a forest look like?
Dad : Tess what are you looking at right now?
Tess : Trees & Grass; But, Dad?
Dad : Yes, Tess
Tess : Where are the Bears & Werewolves?
Dad : Look hard & you just might see them, (grinning)
Parker : Dad, if we're in the forest then we are hunters!
Dad: Oh, really we are hunters
Parker : Yes, I want to hunt a bear.
Oh, funny kids! We kept on going & going & going. By this point, Tess was quite concerned that we were lost forever! She kept on saying "But, Dad where are we going? Do you know where we are?" We just told them to sit back & enjoy the beautiful scenery. We were out of the forest on this back road with not a car in sight & the road that just went on, it seemed like forever. So, Clayn got Tess out of her seat belt & she sat on his lap, & got to drive. She got to steer the car & drive for about 5 minutes, Clayn told her to stay in between the lines. She did a pretty good job.
Next, it was Parker's turn, let's just say that he gets distracted very easily. We were laughing, because Clayn let Tess do most of the steering by her self. Definitely not the case with Parker, who got side tracked by a single cow in a field. What a kid!
Then it was my turn, Clayn pulled over & we traded seats, & yes he let me drive. As, I was behind the wheel driving, I realized how I absolutely miss being able to drive. There is a freedom that you are allowed when you are able to drive. I drove for about an hour on this back road, I maybe passed 3 cars. It was so nice & it felt so good! I have thought often when I hear people complain about having to run their kids around & do errands, that they simply do not understand what their lives would be like if they were unable to do this. How would you get to the Dr or the library. Sure, you say take a bus, easier said than done when you've got little one's. Last week I had to get Parker to the Dr at 3:30 & Clayn was in class & I spent 2 1/2 hours trying to find a way to get up to the Dr's office. Something that for the average woman is a piece of cake. But for me, it is a bit of a challenge. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't want pitty. This is life & I know that I am learning to be independent without having the freedom that driving provides. But, oh being able to be there on the open road felt so good, as we talked about what we want in life, where we want to be. Talking about the good times that we had in Provo, when we were both single. Days that I definitely would not trade for anything. Looking back on them now, those were great times. Oh, how I truly do miss Provo, I would move back there in a heart beat. It is so pretty & those mountains. Good times & Good Memories! We ended up driving on the back roads all the way past Malad, we got home about 10:00 last night.
I truly cannot think of a better way to spend an evening than taking a Sunday drive & exploring roads & paths where we have never been, to be able to see the beauty of the earth, the beautiful trees, the green valley, hawks flying, a deer watching us as intently as we were watching him, seeing a rainbow after some very hard rain. Seeing this valley that the Lord has blessed us with for what it truly is; a place of beauty.
Something as simple, as a Sunday afternoon ride can truly be one of many Life Lesson's, that we can share with our children. The lessons are there for all of us, if we will simply take the time to open our eye's & see what the Lord wants to show us. So, you're asking what is the lesson that is so profound that you had to share this with us, to me it is simply this :
Life is to be enjoyed with the little things that happens each day, a smile from a stranger, a kiss on the check from your child, seeing a rainbow, watching a sunset, holding hands. It's these small things that happen in our lives that make our lives so worth living.

You need to do this more often. It was good for you to get behind the wheel. Sounds like just a good relaxing afternoon, and who doesn't need them? Love you.
